Married man who went to meet fake 13-year-old girl spared jail

A married middle-aged man who wore his orange Liverpool shirt to meet a fictional 13-year-old girl was caught out in a paedophile hunter vigilante sting.

Martin Cash thought he was chatting online to a young underage girl but it was, in fact, an adult and a member of a so-called vigilante group called UK Guardian.

The 52-year-old got involved in a chat with someone who gave “herself” the fake name of Amy Rodgers, in a conversation which turned increasingly sexual.

Cash, of All Hallows Drive, Speke, said he wanted to perform sex acts.

Liverpool Crown Court heard an arrangement was made to meet, with Cash telling the fake child that he would be recognisable, wearing Liverpool FC’s luminous orange third top.

Cash told “Amy” to meet outside Woolton Post Office, but instead of a young girl two members of UK Guardian arrived and challenged him, and police were called to perform the arrest.

Today, Cash very narrowly avoided going to jail in a case which Judge Richard Pratt QC described as “one of the most difficult balancing acts of his career.”

Cash was handed a 12-month jail term, suspended for 12 months, meaning he was free to leave the dock for the offence of sexual grooming, which ended on August 3.

After the fake Amy Rodgers profile was set up on a website, Cash responded to the web user, telling her, “You’re not 24.”

“Amy” replied: “I’m 13-years-old.”

Cash said: “It’s an 18-year-old {website}, and added, “People talk naughty here,” before asking for her home address and what school she attended.

He later enquired about “Amy’s” parents as the messages between the pair became increasingly sexual for around two days.

Eventually, Cash said, “maybe we {will} meet one day”, before arranging the meeting.

Judge Pratt told Cash: “Had you met a real child of this {13} age at this location, you would be going to prison.

“…you exchanged grotesque sexual content with her, this contact happened over a matter of days.

“When you went to meet this 13-year-old, your motive was sexual. You have a most unhealthy proclivity towards children.”

Cash was ordered to observe to an electronic curfew, meaning he must be indoors between the hours of 9pm and 6.30am.

He must undergo 40 days of a rehabilitation activity, and sign on to the Sex Offenders Register for the next decade.
