Jailed: Pensioner molested four-year-old girl whose life he ‘devastated’

A mother has told a court how a 74-year-old man who sexually assaulted her four-year-old daughter had devastated her child’s life.

The little girl was five when her mother noticed a big change in her behaviour and she told her mum how Roger Holt had sexually assaulted her.

During sentencing at Leicester Crown Court the mother, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the little girl, told the court her daughter, now aged six, had been transformed by her ordeal.

She said: “Last year when I found out my daughter had been sexually assaulted my family’s life changed forever.

“It’s hard to put into words just how much this has impacted on my whole family.

“She will mention what happened to her and it really upsets her.

“No child of six should have these memories.

“There are no words to say how much I despise the man who has done this to her and no sentence will be as long as the one he has given us.”

She added that she worried her daughter would never be able to trust men and that her own mental health had been so badly affected she was reported missing by her family at one point and was searched for by the police helicopter.

Holt, of Babingley Drive, Stadium Estate, Leicester, pleaded guilty to four counts of sexual assault and was jailed for three years and four months on Monday.

The court heard from prosecutor Lynsey Knott about how the little girl’s behaviour change was noticed in August last year, leading to her mother finding out about the abuse.

Miss Knott said during that conversation she disclosed to her mother the defendant had made her touch him when he had been to visit them at her house.

The defendant denied everything to the police but confessed the following month. After he pleaded guilty in court the little girl revealed other sexual offences the defendant had committed against her.

Miss Knott said: “She told her mum the defendant had touched her with his hands both over her clothing and under her clothing.

“She made reference to when he asked her to close her eyes. She said no he covered her eyes with his hand and touched her.”

During sentencing, Recorder David Herbert said: “You behaved as you did for you own sexual gratification.

“Your offending was a gross breach of trust committed on a very young child who was particularly vulnerable due to her young age.

“The affect upon her and her family has been severe.”

Holt will be on the sex offenders register and banned from working with children on his release.
