Paedophile with ‘unquenchable sexual appetite’ preyed on children
A “dangerous” paedophile was jailed for nine years for a series of sexual offences upon three schoolgirls, who have been left traumatised.
Peter Yates (46) began offending as a teenager and preyed on two other children in his 30s and 40s, Leicester Crown Court was told.
Passing sentence, Judge Philip Head said: “Your offending demonstrates to me you are an entrenched and incorrigible paedophile with an unquenchable sexual appetite.”
The judge outlined the offences, committed in Leicestershire, starting when Yates was 14 or 15-years-old, when he abused a 13-year-old victim.
The sexual touching only ceased when she threatened to “tell everybody” about what he was doing.
Judge Head said: “It’s had a huge impact upon her and her daily life.
“It’s affected her ability to cope, she resorted to alcohol abuse, self-harming and had suicidal thoughts – the impact upon her has been absolutely dreadful.”
The second victim was 15 and Yates was 34-years-old when sexual touching took place.
The third victim was initially abused at the age of 11, when the defendant was in his 40’s.
He told her “This is our secret.”
Judge Head said: “It was followed up by a stream of wholly inappropriate sexualised text messages, referring to adult sexual activity.
“It was a grooming process and you asked her to delete the messages, telling her ‘Otherwise it will make me look like a paedo.’
“Two years later you sexually touched her again and that elicited disclosure which brought about your prosecution.”
The judge said Yates had attempted to minimise his behaviour when interviewed by a probation officer who prepared a pre-sentence report on him.
In addition to the nine year jail sentence, of which he was told to expect to serve two thirds, the judge extended Yates’ licence period by an additional six years.
He was placed on a lifetime sexual harm prevention order – with restrictions including having no unsupervised contact, even on social media, with females under 16.
His name and future addresses will be logged on a sex offender register, indefinitely.
Yates, of Hagley Road, Birmingham, pleaded guilty to four counts of indecently assaulting the first victim, between 1985 and 1986.
He admitted two sexual assaults on the second victim, both occurring on one day, in 2006.
He further admitted two counts of sexual activity with a child, relating to the third victim, the latest offence committed last year.
