Paedophile had indecent images of children

A Welsh paedophile with over 17 previous convictions for sexual offences after police traced him to Scotland and found indecent images of children on his phone

James Hemmings, 61, was sentenced at Newport Crown Court on Friday after pleading guilty to possessing indecent images of children.

Police raided his home in Penarth on February 2 this year after receiving intelligence he had been accessing child pornography on the internet.

The defendant wasn’t present at his home address at the time of the raid but he was arrested in Scotland on February 3 on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children.

An iPhone was seized from him and he was taken to Cardiff Bay police station where he was questioned. In his interview Hemmings admitted he had viewed indecent images on a website he visited on his iPad.

The iPhone and iPad were examined but nothing was found on them. Police later examined a Misconduct SD card found in a Sony smartphone where indecent images were discovered.

In total 14 Category A images were found – the most serious – along with eight Category B images, 224 Category C images, 232 prohibited images and 20 images of extreme pornography. A number of video images were included in that.

Hemmings was re-interviewed and repeated that he had been using the devices to access indecent images of children.

Prosecutor Harold Baker also told the court about Hemmings’ previous sexual offence convictions, including 13 convictions for making indecent photographs of children on his home computer.

He also previously received six years imprisonment after being convicted of indecently assaulting two children, between 1994 and 2001 and in 2005 respectively.

Hemmings, of Brockhill Way, who wore a grey Help for Heroes hoodie in the dock, was sentenced to 16 months imprisonment.
