Mum speaks out after Bristol man jailed for grooming 14-year-old girl

A mum has spoken out after her 14-year-old daughter was groomed by a man 10 years older than her.

Carl Brown, 24, was jailed for three years and nine months, after preying on and having sexual activity with the child.

The Bristol mum, who cannot be named for legal reason, said Brown’s actions had left her daughter breaking down, self-harming and devastated.

She said it was her “worst nightmares coming true”.

Brown, of Upjohn Crescent in Hartcliffe, was sent to prison and ordered to go on the sexual offenders’ register after admitting the offences at Bristol Crown Court on Monday, June 26.

The mum said Brown had met her daughter at a party in January 2016 before he began contacting her on social media.

“He was contacting her on Facebook,” the mum said.

“He knew how old she was and took advantage.

“He asked her to meet up – and they did a couple of times – and he put pressure on her. She was a child, he should have known better.”

Eventually the girl broke down in the summer of that year and began self-harming.

“She went into school one day and was in tears, she told them what had happened,” she explained.

The police became involved and the brave girl gave them statements about what had happened.

Officers were also able to access Facebook messages between the pair showing what had happened.

“He really could have targeted anyone and he has left her suffering so much,” the mum said.

“It is hard, but we’ve been trying to rebuild our lives since this happen.

“I have constantly been trying get the word out that children really should not be speaking to anyone at all online, as there are people out there like him that will groom children.

“She was quite outgoing, but is now more reserved. It is going to take her so much time to get over this.

“It is an absolute nightmare.

“For someone to do that to a child is horrific and everyone needs to be aware of people like him.

“I personally don’t think his sentence was long enough for what he has done and I think every parent would agree.”
