Paedo who claimed Russians ‘hacked his computer’ to plant child abuse images is caged

A pervert who claimed he was framed for downloading child abuse images and vowed “not to let hackers win” has been jailed after failing to convince a judge.

John Smith, 68, amassed a horrifying library of incestuous child abuse and tried to palm off his crimes onto “Russian hackers”.

Warped Smith, 68, of Rugby, Warks was caught with 90 videos of children being sexually harmed and more than a hundred pictures of naked girls after police seized his computer last year.

But instead of admitting he had willingly got his hands on the illegal porn, Smith insisted he was the victim of an international criminal conspiracy – a story that a detective equated to “walking on the moon”.

Horrendous files – with sick names such as “10yo daughter with dad” and “11yo f***** by daddy” – were downloaded onto Smith’s computer using peer-to-peer file-sharing, West Mercia Police learned.

Smith originally denied seven charges of making indecent images of children, before dramatically changing his pleas at a pre-trial hearing at Coventry Crown Court.

Giving evidence at the Trial of Issue on August 4, Smith said that he had innocently downloaded films, music or drivers and had no sexual interest in children.

He claimed that when he opened the files and came across anything “abhorrent” he would drop it in another drive and delete it.

When asked why he did so, Smith replied: “Because I’m not giving into hackers.

“They’ve hacked into my email address, a chap in Russia”.

Smith used a programme called Evidence Eliminator to delete some of the illegal files, the court heard.

Detective Constable John Cook, from West Mercia Police’s high-teach crime unit, said: “The movies had explicit file names, from which it would be apparent they related to sexual activity with children.”

“I found no evidence in the data that any person took control of that computer and used its functions from an external source,” he added.

Sentencing Smith, he said: “The fact that you engaged in this behaviour indicates at the very least that you had some form of sexual interest in children.”

Smith was jailed for one year and ordered to register as a sex offender for 10 years.
