Man jailed for sexually abusing young girl 20 years ago
A 60-year-old man has been jailed for 15 years after admitting carrying out a series of sex attacks on a young girl during the 1990s.
Robert Burns , from Salford, was handed the sentence at Manchester Crown Court on Friday after pleading guilty to 18 counts of indecent assault, gross indecency and rape.
The attacks all involved the same victim, who was only six years old when the sexual abuse began in 1990.
She decided to report the attacks to police last year, telling officers that Burns started by getting her on her own and plying her with alcohol before assaulting her.
The abuse gradually became more serious and Burns eventually raped her.
Although the assaults ended in 1994, the victim has continued to suffer during adult life and has experienced depression and panic attacks.
Greater Manchester Police were able to trace Burns and used the young woman’s statement to charge him.
Sergeant Mark Evans was pleased to see Burns given a lengthy custodial sentence and paid tribute to the victim’s courage in reporting the abuse years after it happened.
‘This woman has been incredibly brave by coming forward and helping us put Burns through the court process,’ he said.
‘She should feel that justice has now been done.’
The officer added that he hoped the victim would now be able to put the abuse behind her and make a fresh start.
