Chilling moment serial rapist Ilija High calmly admits three horrific sex attacks including one on 14-year-old girl
THIS is the spine-tingling moment a serial rapist calmly admitted three horrific sex attacks including the attempted rape of a 14-year-old girl.
Chilling footage shows Ilija High, who was jailed for 22 years, tell police officers “right, I’m here to confess”.
27 September 2014 – High sexually assaults and tries to rape a 14-year-old girl on a footpath near West Park nature reserve in the Spondon area of Derby.
7 September 2015 – High rapes an 18-year-old woman three times and tries to rape her a fourth time in Darley Park.
22 December 2015 – High returns to the same footpath in Spondon where he sexually assaults and tries to rape a 28-year-old woman.
13 March 2017 – Police launch a dedicated appeal hotline and publicise this through 40,000 flyers, social media and a media appeal. Someone recognises High and contacts police.
14 March 2017 – Police visit High’s home and obtain a DNA sample from him.
15 March 2017 – High hands himself in at a police station, is arrested and confesses to the offences when he is interviewed by police.
In court High pleaded guilty to three counts of rape, three counts of attempted rape, one assault, three counts of making indecent photographs of a child, one count of possessing a prohibited image of a child and one count of possessing extreme pornographic images involving animals.
In the sickening crime spree in Derby, High targeted lone females in secluded areas and parks.
He tried to rape the 14-year-old on a footpath in Spondon on September 7 2014, before sexually assaulting a 28-year-old woman in the same location on December 22 2015.
Then the sexual predator raped an 18-year-old woman three times at a nature reserve nearly Darley Park in September 2015 while covering her face with a black hoodie and carrying a knife.
In new footage of his police interview, High says: “Right, well I’m here to confess to three crimes – two sexual assaults and one rape.”
He also revealed in another interview how one terrified victim feared he was going to rob her.
“She said, ‘Do you want my iPad? Do you want money? I can pay you,” he says.
“Because I think she probably initially thought it was some kind of robbery or attempted robbery, which – it wasn’t the case.
“I mean, I didn’t want her iPad or any money or anything.
“Well, I could have taken it but, you know, I wasn’t after anything like that.”
In victim statements the 14-year-old said the attack “destroyed her confidence”, while the 18-year-old said that she felt “ashamed”.
The oldest victim tried to fight him off by putting her fingers in his eyes before he repeatedly punched her.
A huge police manhunt was launched in Derby which saw 40,000 leaflets distributed in March featuring an e-fit of the suspect.
This lead to a resident suggesting High was responsible within hours, and he confessed at a police station the day after police took his DNA sample.
Now Derbyshire Police are releasing a min-documentary about the case – called Catching A Criminal – featuring interviews with officers and High’s confession to seven sex crimes against three victims.
Detective Chief Inspector Emlyn Richards said: “Without a shadow of a doubt, he will have continued to offend if we hadn’t caught him.
“I think he is a real predator and a danger to women.”
Derby rapist admits five more crimes, including making indecent photographs of a child
A serial sex attacker from Derby has admitted five more crimes – including making indecent photographs of a child.
Ilija High, from Chaddesden, pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent photographs of a child. The 23-year-old also admitted possessing a prohibited image of a child and possessing extreme pornographic images.
Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court heard the crimes all happened in High’s Autumn Grove address. High appeared at the court via videolink. He wore a grey jumper and had short, black hair and a goatee beard.
High previously admitted a string of sex attacks in Spondon and Darley Abbey – he pleaded guilty to seven sexual offences against three victims when he appeared before Derby Crown Court on April 18.
The attacks happened on September 27, 2014, in Spondon, September 7, 2015, at Darley Abbey and December 22, 2015 in Spondon.
In April, he pleaded guilty to attempt to rape on September 27, 2014, committing a serious sexual assault, attempting to rape and three counts of rape on September 7, 2015, and attempt to rape on December 22, 2015.
After his conviction on April 18, the man who led the hunt for the serial rapist, Det Insp Emlyn Richards, said he believed it was possible High committed more offences. He said: “There are a number of historical sex crimes that we continue to review and there are a number of reported incidents that we are assessing.
“It’s a possibility he has attacked more women. Please, if you were one of them, come forward.
High will appear at Derby Crown Court next week on Friday, June 23, for sentence in connection with all of the offences.
