Retired teacher downloaded thousands of child abuse pics from his Wishaw home

A retired teacher has been exposed as a depraved sexual pervert after admitting downloading thousands of indecent images of children from his home in Wishaw.

George Syme pleaded guilty to possessing and making the sick images at his home in East Hamilton Street between March 2013 and August last year.

In total the 68-year-old was caught with over 10,000 images of male and female children aged between just two and 15.

The court heard that information had been received by police on August 1 last year there had been indecent images of children downloaded from the IP address of Syme.

A warrant was granted with police swooping on Syme’s home on the morning of August 10 last year.

The door was answered by Syme and police then conducted an extensive search of his home.

During the course of the search, police recovered a series of devices including hard-drives and USB sticks.

A preliminary examination of a hard-drive was found to contain indecent images and Syme was told by police he was being detained.

He made no reply and was taken to Motherwell Police Office.

He was cautioned and charged just before 2pm on that date and appeared on petition at court the next day.

Fiscal depute Imran Bashir informed the court that of the 10,098 images found on Syme’s devices, 3098 of them were classed as Category A – defined as the most grotesque of all.

Mr Bashir added that 3400 images were classed as Category B with another 1600 being Category C.

Syme’s solicitor appealed the Sheriff Daniel Kelly QC to grant his client bail so he could “get his affairs in order”.

The solicitor added: “At this stage I would ask that the bail order be continued.

“He was subject to bail on August 11 last year and he has fully adhered to those conditions.

“He is a 68-year-old man with no offending history.

“Although he accepts custody is a likely disposal, it would allow him to put his affairs in order if the ultimate sanction is imposed.”

Sheriff Kelly deferred sentence on Syme until July 12 and called for criminal justice and social work reports to be prepared.

Syme, who will also be placed on the sex offenders register, was granted bail.
