Paedophile sexually abused young boy

A paedophile who crept into a child’s bedroom in the middle of the night to sexually assault and photograph him as he slept has been jailed for five years.

Bradley Challis, 24, preyed upon the young boy, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, in February 2016.

Challis, of Lodge Road, Braintree, pleaded guilty to nine offences on May 30 this year. They were two counts of sexual assault of a child under the age of 13, one count of taking indecent images of a child, four counts of making indecent images of children and two counts of distributing indecent images of children.

He was arrested on March 14 last year after police attended his mother’s property which was situated close to his own home.

On arrival, officers explained they were there as an IP address from that property had been used to access indecent images of children.

Challis, who happened to be at the property at the time, admitted he was the person police were looking for, saying: “I have been doing this for a while now, I have been stupid.”

In subsequent interviews with police, he admitted accessing the vile photographs and films on his various devices by using his mother’s WiFi connection.

“He said he had been viewing indecent images of children for two or three years,” said prosecutor Jamie Sawyer at Chelmsford Crown Court today (July 11).

“He gave the web address of a site he would use around three of four times a week.

“He said that once he logged onto that site he could view other users’ films or photographs.

“He also made admissions to contacting other users on that site in order to exchange indecent images of children.”

The court heard how Challis admitted to viewing both moving and still images of boys and girls ranging from Category A, the most serious category, to Category C. Some of the Category C images included babies.

“He said he would get sexual gratification by looking at these images,” said Mr Sawyer.

“He was asked about using these sites to chat to children and he described building up what I would call a relationship with someone called Rocky.”

Although Challis had admitted speaking to this child online, no meeting ever took place between them.

But the most sinister of Challis’ crimes were the horrific sexual assaults on a sleeping youngster last spring.

Mr Sawyer said: “He said he lowered the boy’s pyjamas, he said he put his finger in the boy’s mouth and kissed him on the lips.”

But not only had Challis abused the young child as he slept, he had taken bursts of photographs on his phone so he could view them at a later date.

After a short adjournment to consider the case, Judge Morgan turned to sentence a snivelling Challis in the dock.

Judge Morgan said: “You had kept from your family the fact that you had developed a taste for viewing child abuse images.

“You had sought some treatment for that addiction.

“You had turned your viewing of abuse images into actual physical abuse of a child.

“That is a step that many who view images simply do not make.”

Challis was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison for the first count of sexual activity with a child, two years for the second count of sexual activity with a child and 12 months for making indecent photographs of a child, all to run concurrently.

On the four counts of making indecent images of children he was given one sentence of three months in prison and three lots of six months in prison, as well as six months and three months for the distribution offences, all to be served concurrently to each other but consecutively to the first count.

In addition, a Sexual Harm Prevention Order has been made against him which will last for ten years.

Finally, Judge Morgan ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the devices which contained hundreds of still and moving abuse images.
