12 years for man who abused and neglected children

A man who subjected two children to prolonged abuse and neglect has been jailed for 12 years.

Garth Gatland, 39, of Austin Drive, Cambridge was sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court today (September 5) after previously being found guilty of two counts of child cruelty.

The court heard how Gatland abused a girl aged six and a boy aged 15 over a period of two years between 2014 and 2016.

The abuse of the girl included hitting her repeatedly with implements including a wooden spoon, making her stand naked in the window and making her run for up to four-and-a-half hours barefoot on a treadmill so she would sleep at bed time.

The girl was also subjected to “water boarding”, made to stand in stress positions and tipped out of her bed while she was sleeping on regular occasions.

The boy was the victim of regular assaults and made to dispose of and hide drugs for Gatland.

The abuse was reported to police by an acquaintance of Gatland in October last year and he was arrested.

A forensic scientist found that the girl had either ingested cocaine or had been exposed to it as traces were found in samples of her hair. She was also discovered to have significant bruises and burns to her back, legs, feet and neck.

Sadist who waterboarded girl and made her run on a treadmill for hours to be sentenced

A “sadist” convicted of child cruelty after ‘waterboarding’ a young girl and making her run barefoot for hours on a treadmill is due to be sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court today (September 5).

Garth Gatland, 39, of Austin Drive, Cambridge, also subjected a boy to prolonged abuse and was found guilty of two counts of child cruelty by a jury on May 25.

The court heard how Gatland abused the girl and the teenage boy over a period of two years between 2014 and 2016.

The abuse of the girl – who Gatland believed was “evil” and had “ruined his life” – included hitting her repeatedly with implements including a wooden spoon and making her run for up to four-and-a-half hours barefoot on a treadmill.

The girl was also “hog-tied to the bed” using tights and subjected to ‘waterboarding’ – in which water is poured over a cloth covering the face to simulate drowning.

The boy was the victim of regular assaults and made to dispose of and hide drugs for Gatland.

‘Sadistic’ Cambridge child abuser convicted

A “sadistic” man who abused a young girl forcing her to stand naked in front of a window and subjecting her to “waterboarding”, has been convicted of child cruelty.

Garth Gatland, 39, of Austin Drive, Cambridge, also abused a teenaged boy. The abuse took place between 2014 and 2016.

Gatland denied two counts of child cruelty but was found guilty at Cambridge Crown Court on Thursday.

He will be sentenced at a later date.

His co-defendant Marie Maltby, 32, was found not guilty of two counts of child cruelty.

Over the course of two years the boy was subjected to repeated abuse and was now aged 15, Cambridgeshire Police said.

A forensic scientist found traces of cocaine in the girl’s hair, suggesting she had either “ingested cocaine or been exposed to it”, the force added.

The girl, who is now aged six, was repeatedly hit with implements, including a wooden spoon, and was made to stand in “stress positions”, officers said.

She was made to expose herself at the window, endured waterboarding and was regularly tipped out of her bed while she was sleeping.

Gatland would also make her run for up to four-and-a-half hours barefoot on a treadmill so that she would sleep at bedtime, officers said.

The girl was found with bruises and burns on her back, legs, feet and neck when the abuse was uncovered in October.

An acquaintance of Gatland’s reported him to police.

Det Con Chris Down said: “Gatland subjected his victims to a catalogue of sadistic abuse,” and a sentencing date has not been fixed yet.
