Child rapist finally jailed – 10 years after first complaint

A child abuser who raped two different girls has been jailed for 19 years after a judge told him he had done untold damage to his victims.

Handy man Adrian Jewell, from Liskeard, South East Cornwall, raped his first victim 14 years ago when she was just 12 and he was staying overnight at her Devon home while he was helping to lay carpets.

He stayed in touch with her mother and used his access to the girl to rape her three times more at different locations in the area.

He went on to rape an 18-year-old girl after walking her home from a pub after she got so drunk he could barely stand up.

She was sick when she got home and he stayed with her, pretending to be look after her, and then took advantage of her helpless state to have sex with her.

Jewell’s interest in young girls was confirmed when he left his mobile phone in a bathroom of a house in Torrington and used it to record a topless 17-year-old as she washed.

He denied all the offences but was found guilty by a jury last week and has now been jailed for 19 years by Judge Geoffrey Mercer, QC.

Jewell, aged 42, of Joan Moffat Close, Liskeard, was convicted of a total of five rapes, two sexual assaults, and voyeurism.

The judge told him: “These were serious sexual offences committed by you against three victims over a period of more than ten years.

“You have caused the victims untold damage. I have read their impact statements and the two victims of your sexual abuse were the most seriously affected.”

During a seven day trial the jury heard the offences took place at different times in the 2000s and 2010s in a number of properties in Sticklepath, Bideford and Torrington.

The first complainant was aged 12 when Jewell visited her family home, where he slept on the floor of her bedroom on a small number of occasions.

She woke up in the middle of the night to find him in her bed, on top of her, and having sex with her. Similar incidents happened at a pub where they were both staying and two other houses in North Devon where she lived for a short time.

The girl did not tell anyone at the time but went to the police in 2006 when she was about 15 and made a video recorded statement.

She said she had pretended to be asleep during the later assaults because she did not know what to do or how to react.

The second girl was 18 when she went to the police in 2015 to complain that Jewell had sex with her after they had both been drinking in a pub together.

She got very drunk and he took her back to her home and helped put her to bed. She told police she woke to find him on top of her having sex.

The third girl, also aged 18, told police Jewell had watched her in the bathroom through a small peep hole in the otherwise frosted skylight above the door. She also found his phone in the bathroom on one occasion.

Police seized the mobile and found clips which must have taken when the device was placed next to the wash basin with the lens pointing upwards.

The footage included images of the girl’s wearing only knickers and her breasts were visible in some clips.

Jewell denied any inappropriate behaviour with any of the girls and said a leg injury from a car crash would have made it impossible to commit some of the offences.

He said he injured both knees in a traffic accident in 1991 and has only been able to walk with the aid of crutches ever since.

He denied climbing into a 12-year-old girl’s bunk bed and having sex with her as slept and said he was physically incapable of climbing up the ladder.

Jewell, who is more than six foot tall, said there would not have been enough clearance between the bed and the ceiling for him to have go in there.

He also denied using his phone to film a teenaged girl secretly in a bathroom and said he may have left it next to the wash basin by accident.

He said he had been filming mould on the walls of the house in Torrington as a favour to the female tenant so she could use the footage to complain to her landlord.

Jewell also denied an allegation raping the 18-year-old.
