Suicide plot for pervert who raped 5-year-old

A LANDSCAPE gardener raped a five-year-old girl after exposing her to the dangers of his “building site” home in Worcester.

Geoffrey Challenor then assembled a suicide kit before driving to Lockerbie in Scotland where he planned to kill himself.

But he was eventually arrested near Walsall and blamed the sex attack on the child copying adult porn she had seen on his computer, Worcester Crown Court heard.

In fact, 270 child sexual abuse images were discovered on his laptop, 70 of which were towards the top level of degradation.

Judge John Cavell said the rape was “an appalling act” and sentenced Challenor to a total of eight years’ jail. He extended his licence period on release by four years and imposed a life ban on unsupervised contact with children under 18.

Challenor was also barred from working with children and having access to child sexual abuse images.

The judge said a psychiatric report concluded that Challenor posed a significant risk of causing serious harm to children in the future.

Two girls went to the defendant’s home on September 14 last year but it had exposed wiring, light switches left unscrewed to walls and missing floorboards, said Walter Bealby, prosecuting.

“It was a building site,” he said. “Next morning he forced the five-year-old to perform oral sex on him. She thought she had been poisoned.”

Police later found a hosepipe and a knife in Challenor’s car.

He said he was suffering from depression and planned to die.

Victim impact statements concluded that both girls faced problems in the future because of his conduct.

Defence counsel Adam Western said Challenor’s guilty plea had saved the rape victim from giving evidence at a trial.
