Chelmsford paedophile who groomed children online and had over 900 indecent images avoids jailed

A Chelmsford paedophile who had sexually explicit conversations with an underage girl and boy is spared jail.

Simon Collins, 52, of Moran Avenue, convinced the underage girl to send him sexual pictures of herself and talked to a 14-year old boy about possibly meeting up, a court heard.

The former mortgage broker, who has a 19-year old daughter, was also found to have over 900 indecent images of children as young as 14 months on his computer.

He also held videos showing oral sex and intercourse with dogs, as well as life-threatening acts

On May, 16, Collins pleaded guilty to 12 sex offences spanning over five years.

But in Chelmsford Crown Court, he was spared jail by Judge Patricia Lynch QC who said that his “saving grace” was that he hadn’t actually met or pursued any physical contact with the children.

She imposed concurrent sentences of four months for each of ten offences of downloading, or making, indecent images of children from 2010-2017, plus a total of 18 months for inciting the girl, aged 13-15 to engage in sexual activity and for grooming a boy of 14.

All sentences were suspended for two years with Collins undertaking a sexual offenders’ treatment programme, be supervised for two years.

He will also have to sign the sex offenders’ register and will be monitored by the police on his internet usage under a sexual harm prevention order for the next five years.

Judge Lynch told Collins: “You should be hanging your head in shame.

“People like yourself forget that those images are real children who are subjected to degrading, horrendous abuse. How would you feel if it was your daughter who was being filmed?”

Collins, who has a 19-year-old daughter, replied: “I would be disgusted, shocked and appalled and exceptionally angry.”

After the breakdown of his marriage, the 52-year old was living with his parents in Moran Avenue when police carried out the raid.

Prosecutor Raj Joshi said that police found 936 images on his computer in his bedroom with the images of children from babies to 14, including penetration.

In 2010, Collins also talked with a man in a chatroom who said he had been having sex with his step sister since she was four and a girl living in America who was 13.

The next year, the pervert began talking to the underage girl and asked her to send sexual photographs of herself while he described what he would do.

He encouraged more photo’s to be sent and expressed a desire “for a more active photos involving penetrative sex”, said the prosecutor.

Collins also spoke to a 14-year old boy who said he was gay, and talked about meeting up to perform different acts.

Mr Joshi said: “Nothing came of these chats, but the Crown says it’s the actual chats, the conversation, which is crucial. He contacted a child.”

On his arrest, he lost his job as a mortgage broker which he held for 23 years.

Chelmsford father admits 12 sex offences including grooming children and possessing dog porn

A Chelmsford father has admitted 12 sex offences including grooming a 14-year-old boy and inciting an underage girl to send him indecent images of herself.

Simon Collins, 52, had sexual online conversations with children and downloaded hundreds of indecent images and videos while living in his parents’ home on Moran Avenue, after breaking up with his wife.

The paedophile, who has a teenage daughter, pleaded guilty to 12 charges spanning five years at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (May 16).

Collins, who kept his head bowed throughout the hearing, spoke online with a 14-year-old boy in August 2013 about them touching each other, before arranging to meet up for sexual activity.

He also convinced a girl aged between 13 and 15 to send him sexual pictures of herself on December 2, 2010, and searched the internet for ‘familial sexual abuse’.

The pervert possessed 886 prohibited or indecent images of children as young as five, including 292 in Category A, the most serious classification for child pornography.

He also held videos showing oral sex and intercourse with dogs, as well as life-threatening acts.

Police executed a search warrant on the Moran Avenue home Collins shared with his parents and brother on January 20, 2015, after receiving intelligence about his online activity.

Prosecutor Sharon Hall said: “Chats had also been going on through Skype and other means. He was in a chat with a boy who told him he was 14 years of age.

“They talked about touching each other, and the boy said he took tablets for ADHD. They made arrangements to meet up.

“One of the pictures shows pain and suffering for a child. In a police interview he admitted everything.

“He said that all of this started from the breakup of his marriage, after he moved back into his parents’ house and he had more time to look at images on the internet.”

Collins, who has no previous convictions, will be sentenced on June 8 at Chelmsford Crown Court.

Chair of the magistrates, Malcolm Bell, said: “We have no doubt our sentencing powers are insufficient.”

When asked by our reporter whether he is sorry for his crimes, Collins replied: “Of course I am. That’s why I pleaded guilty.”

He is charged with holding three extreme animal porn movies and one video portraying life being threatened, as well as 282 Category A images, 183 in Category B, 405 in Category C and one which is prohibited.

Collins also downloaded four Category A videos, 11 in Category B and 35 in Category C.
