Sex offender who molested two school girls when he was a teenager is sentenced

A sex offender’s disturbing past caught up with him as he was jailed for more than seven years for molesting two young girls when he was a teenager.

Brian Justin Smith, 44, was “exiled” from Teesside following his sexual abuse of the two underage schoolgirls decades ago.

Now he has finally faced justice for his crimes.

He subjected one girl to repeated sexual attacks, touching her and making her carry out sexual acts.

Smith, previously from Norton, made “concerted and protracted efforts” to have sex with the frightened girl who tried to fight back, prosecutor Paul Newcombe told Teesside Crown Court on Monday.

Now an adult and a mother, she told how the abuse cast a shadow over her life in a moving statement read out in court.

She only felt brave enough to come forward many years later after receiving counselling.

Smith sexually assaulted another younger girl in the Stockton area during the same period.

The girl, then under 13, partly held Smith responsible for the anxiety and depression she went on to suffer throughout her life.

She struggled with panic attacks and was terrified by the court case.

Smith was confronted by the victims’ relatives after the girls told their families.

“When confronted 25 to 30 years ago about his conduct he never denied it,” said Jonathan Walker, defending.

“He was given a fairly stark choice – you move away from this area.

“He has been living in almost complete exile in Tyneside ever since. He has always known that this day would come.”

Smith admitted nine offences – six of indecent assault, two of attempted rape, one of indecency with a child.

Judge Howard Crowson told Smith: “Although looking at you now you’re a 44-year-old man, I’m sentencing you as though you were a teenager. It’s not an easy sentencing exercise.”

He jailed Smith for seven years and five months.

Smith, of Vallum Court, Westgate Road, Newcastle, was given an indefinite sexual harm prevention order banning him from contact with girls under 16 and he will be on the sex offenders’ register for life.
