Man admits sex assault on girl

A pervert in his 50s has admitted sexually assaulting an underage girl after befriending her.

David Robinson, 51, took the teenager under his wing, Sunderland magistrates heard.

He accepts it was sexual and that it goes beyond any behaviour that can bee seen as appropriate Brian Payne, prosecuting Magistrates heard Robinson, of Gordon Road, South Shields, exploited the youngster, touching her sexually and forcing her to attend court “clinging to her mother” and in “floods of tears”.

Brian Payne, prosecuting, said: “As time moved on, he became more involved, particularly with the complainant. Her account is that she was touched by him.”

Robinson initially denied sexual assault but changed his plea to guilty on the day of planned trial, admitting that he sexually touched the girl without consent.

Mr Payne said: “Robinson accepts he met the complainant, became friends with her and helped her. “

He touched her on one occasion over her clothing in the area of her bottom, and he accepts in hindsight this behaviour was inappropriate. “

The crown accepts that basis of plea.”

He added: “He accepts it was sexual and that it goes beyond any behaviour that can bee seen as appropriate.” The court heard that while Robinson has previous convictions, they are of a dissimilar nature.

Mr Payne added: “The complainant, when she came to court today, was almost inconsolable. She was clinging to her mother, in floods of tears. Mr Robinson has spared her from having to give evidence.”

The bench adjourned sentencing pending a probation report into Robinson’s personal circumstances, and he was bailed to appear at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court on May 16.
