Jury at Ipswich Crown Court convicts 29-year-old of raping schoolgirl

An Ipswich man accused of raping a schoolgirl has been convicted by a jury.

Leigh Baines, aged 29, of Cavendish Street, had denied two offences of rape and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

The court was told that the victim was aged nine years old when she was first abused by Baines

He was found guilty of one of the rape charges and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

He was cleared of the second charge of rape but convicted of a charge of sexual assault.

Sentence was adjourned for a pre-sentence report.

Lindsay Cox, prosecuting, at Ipswich Crown Court said the offences came to light after the girl made allegations to her parents.

He said the victim had also confided in a school friend about what had happened to her.

The court heard that after his arrest Baines denied the allegations and denied ever being alone with the girl.
