Babysitter rapist ‘is risk to public’

A man who raped a 15-year-old babysitter as she slept has been jailed for 10 years.

Michael Barr, 19, attacked the girl after sneaking into the home where she was working in Ribbleton, Preston, last August.

Despite denying the claims and saying it was the girl who initiated sex, Barr, of Burnslack Road, Moor Nook, Preston, was found guilty of rape by a jury in April at Preston Crown Court.

Passing sentence yesterday Judge Pamela Badley said: “You present a very high risk of re-offending and serious physical harm to the public”.

The court heard that Barr, a friend of the homeowner, slipped into the house unseen and carried out the attack.

The girl told the jury she fell asleep downstairs after putting the children she was looking after to bed.

She awoke to find Barr, a man she had never met before, having sex with her.

Despite her repeated protests Barr continues with the sex attack.

In evidence another woman said that in 2001 she had been indecently assaulted by Barr after he broke into her home.

Barr denied this assault and said he had only broken into the house to steal. He was again found guilty.

At Preston Crown Court Tony Cross, defending, said Barr still saw his convictions for the sex offences as a miscarriage of justice.

In addition to the 10 year custodial term, Barr was disqualified from working with children and placed on the sex offenders’ register for life.
