Exeter man jailed for sex with 14-year-old girl
A dog walker has been jailed after a shocked neighbour returned to her home to find him having sex with a 14-year-old girl.
Kevin Briggs who is also known as Kevin Collins took the drunken schoolgirl out for a late night walk with a dog in a village near Exeter but then went into a neighbour’s unlocked back door and took the girl upstairs for sex.
The neighbour came home to find them half naked on her bed. She chucked them out and then called the police because she knew the girl was only 14.
Briggs, aged 33, originally from Sidmouth, now of Broadfields Road, Exeter, admitted sexual activity with a child and was jailed for three years and four months by Judge Geoffrey Mercer, QC, at Exeter Crown Court.
He told him:”You say you had no sexual interest in the girl before that night. I do not accept that. The aggravating features of this case are the significant disparity in age and the fact you had some responsibility for her that night.
“You had been drinking with her and knew she had been drinking heavily. She was only 14 and had drunk more than she should and was affected by it. You took advantage of her.”
Mr Sean Brunton, prosecuting, said the girl was visiting another member of the household in Feniton where Briggs was living at the time and everyone had been drinking.
Another teenager had gone to bed already because he had become ill through drinking and Briggs took the girl for a walk around the village with a dog.
They ended up going into a neighbour’s house where Briggs led her into a bedroom and they had sex.
The girl was so drunk she felt she was not in control of what happened and did not want to have sex.
The neighbour caught them having sex on her bed and threw them out of her house before calling the police.
Mr Paul Grumbar, defending, said Briggs had been found not guilty of the much more serious offence of rape by a jury at his trial last month.
He said the sex was consensual and Briggs’ account was that it was the girl who initiated it by kissing him while they were out walking the dog.
