Pervert found with vile images claimed ‘I’m not a paedophile’
A pervert caught with images of children as young as two being abused has been spared jail.
Police found more than 4,000 pictures and videos on three devices in Paul Darkings’ home in Stockton
The 39-year-old pleaded guilty to making 302 indecent photographs of children at the most serious category A level, making 224 at category B, and 3,639 at category C and also possession of extreme pornographic images.
Prosecutor Jenny Haigh told Teesside Crown Court the aggravating features of the case were the large number of the victims involved and their young ages.
“The defendant has made searches which clearly showed he was interested in this finding this kind of behaviour,” she said.
“When police came to the door he said ‘I have been downloading illegal stuff for a while. I’m not a paedophile, it’s just on my computer.’”
The court heard the probation service had expressed concerns that Darkings refused to accept he had a sexual interest in children.
But he had already sought help from charities including the Lucy Faithfull Foundation which works with the perpetrators of child sex abuse, the court heard.
Sentencing him, Judge Deborah Sherwin noted he had no previous convictions and said he would benefit from a treatment programme.
She said: “I share the view that you are fooling yourself saying the reason you were carrying out these offences wasn’t indicative of a sexual interest in children.”
She gave Darkings, of Fescue Close, Preston Farm, a 12-month jail sentence suspended for two years with a rehabilitation activity requirement. He was also made the subject of a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
