Man hands himself into police claiming ‘I’m a paedophile’

A MAN walked into a police station and demanded to be locked up claiming ‘I’m a paedophile’.

Steven Wright, from Paignton, admitted sexually touching a child and inciting sexual activity with a child when he appeared before magistrates in Torquay.

Wright, 33, was remanded in custody until the sentencing date in October. Magistrates said it was for his own safety as well as the public’s.

Prosecutor Philip Sewell said the case was unusual because no complaint had been made against the defendant. However Wright had gone to a police station and claimed to have molested a 10-year-old girl.

“He said he was a paedophile,” said the prosecutor.

“He is a potential risk to himself and to others.”

Defending, Alasdair James, said there would be no application for bail.

“It is an unusual case in that notwithstanding a degree of caution on my part he has made it very clear he wanted to enter guilty pleas at the earliest possible stage.”

Magistrates ordered a pre-sentence report and sent the case for sentence to Exeter Crown Court.

Wright, of Garfield Road, was told to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register and remanded in custody until October 20.
