Child rapist who groomed girl through PlayStation jailed

A paedophile has been jailed for 12 years for raping a young girl after an investigation by a specialised police team in Tameside.

Martin Sage, from Rochester in Kent, was found guilty of child sexual exploitation and was also placed on a Sexual Harm Prevention Order indefinitely after being convicted at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court.

Sage first made contact with his victim in 2011, when she was 13 years old, through an online computer game and continued to groom her until she eventually agreed to meet him.

The court heard that he manipulated her to satisfy his own sexual needs until the girl was 15 years old.

He continued to communicate with her and by deploying tactics of affection, persistence and control, groomed her until she eventually agreed to meet him.

During the meeting he raped his victim despite knowing her age. He continued to exploit and manipulate her to satisfy his own sexual needs and desires until she was 15 years old.

At a previous hearing, the 44-year-old pleaded guilty to

  • One count of meeting a child following sexual grooming

  • Six counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity

  • Three counts of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child

  • Three counts of taking indecent photographs of a child.

Project Phoenix was set up to help Greater Manchester Police respond better to cases of child sexual exploitation.
