A NURSE from Bridgend raped a teenage girl while pretending to give her sex education.
John Donovan, 38, of Brackla, Bridgend, was jailed for eight years after a jury at Swansea Crown Court heard how he took advantage of the youngster.
Donovan, a nurse at Swansea’s Singleton Hospital, offered to show the girl sexually explicit pictures he had downloaded from the internet to teach her about sex.
Geraint Walters, prosecuting, said Donovan showed her a video and then started asking her if she knew how to “turn herself on”.
In one film she saw a young woman touching herself before her boyfriend walked in and had sex with her.
Mr Walters added that Donovan’s internet collection displayed women having sex in a variety of positions.
The court heard how the lesson ended with Donovan touching and licking the girl’s breasts and genitals, and then having intercourse with her while sitting in a leather chair and admiring the computer images.
Donovan, who is married and was living in Swansea at the time, denied the charge, claiming the incident had never happened, but he was convicted unanimously by the jury.
Six of the female jurors returned to the court later to hear Judge Christopher Morton tell Donovan he would have to register with the police as a sex offender for the rest of his life so they could keep track of him.
The judge added: “You have lost a great deal by this conviction.”
Janet Williams, general manager at Singleton Hospital, said: “The conviction has absolutely nothing to do with the hospital.
“Mr Donovan is no longer employed with the NHS trust.
He was suspended after the allegation was made and he has since been dismissed.”
