Child abuser sentenced to 17-years

A 65-year-old man has been jailed for 17 years after being found guilty of raping a child and sexually assaulting her.

Graham Johnson of Broomfield Common in Sproughton was found guilty of a number of sexual offences on Monday 23 May, following a trial at Ipswich Crown Court.

He was found guilty of:

  • Child rape

  • Five counts of sexual assault of a child under 13

  • Sexual activity in the presence of a child

  • Causing or inciting a child under 13 into sexual activity.

The girl disclosed she had been sexually abused by Johnson after he initially began touching her and taking photographs of her.

Police searched his home at the time of his arrest and seized items that were examined by specialist officers. Officers also managed to recover DNA evidence that supported the girl’s account of what had occurred.

Johnson continued to deny the offences during his police interviews, but was subsequently charged.

At Johnson’s sentencing Judge Rupert Overbury jailed him for 11-and-a-half years for the rape offence

He was imprisoned for a further five-and-a-half years for the sex assaults on a child.

The sentences for the remaining two charges were to run concurrently.

He appeared at the Crown Court on Friday, 24 June, where he was sentenced to a total of 17 years for the offences.
