Holywell man jailed for ‘grooming’ schoolgirl

A 30-YEAR-OLD man who groomed his partner’s schoolgirl sister for sex has been jailed for three and a half years.

Philip Lee Hughes was locked up at Caernarfon Crown Court on Monday after admitting two charges of sexual activity with a teenager.

A judge heard the offences took place at an Anglesey address in February and March this year.

Hughes, of Brynteg in Holywell, had been in a relationship with the 14-year-old victim’s older sister, who gave birth to his child earlier this year.

The court heard the defendant, known as Lee Hughes, ‘groomed’ the teenager by sending her a series of text messages between Christmas last year and March this year.

Simon Medland, prosecuting, said the messages started off as humorous and light-hearted before becoming more graphic.

The offences came to light days after the victim’s sister’s baby girl was born, after the victim’s mother found the messages on her phone.

The teenager said Hughes had ‘ruined her life’ and she was having nightmares.

Jailing him Judge Philip Hughes said: “The effects of your actions may not be known until she grows into adulthood.”

Unemployed Hughes was disqualified from ever working with children, and ordered to sign the sex offenders register.
