Update: Clarke has now been released and has returned to Leeds
Man exposed himself to girl in Leeds city centre
A teenage girl gave up her job in Leeds city centre because she was so upset and scared by a man’s behaviour when he exposed himself to her.
Leeds Crown Court heard that sex offender Patrick Clarke was already on bail for other offences after a number of complaints about his indecent exposure in the area near West Yorkshire Playhouse and Leeds Parish Church.
Glen Parsons prosecuting said the 17-year-old girl saw Clarke approaching her as she sat on bench and thought he was going to sit next to her but he passed by and went into some nearby arches.
She then heard him making grunting noises of a sexual nature and saw him standing looking at her while he committed a lewd act.
She called 999 and he ran off, the court was told.
She said she felt so uncomfortable going to work in the area that she gave up her job.
Mr Parsons said on May 16 a woman had reported Clarke for indecently exposing himself in Kirkgate.
The next day a man saw him exposing himself outside West Yorkshire Playhouse and on May 23 he was seen by a taxi driver parked near Leeds Parish Church walking along exposing himself.
The court heard he had a previous conviction for sexual assault and for indecent exposure and was jailed for 20 weeks last year for indecent exposure.
Marlon Grossman representing him said Clarke appreciated he would receive a longer sentence and was determined to benefit from any help he could receive in prison.
Clarke, 59 of Asket Crescent, Seacroft, Leeds admitted four charges of indecent exposure and was found guilty by magistrates on a fifth charge.
Jailing him for 18 months, Judge Peter Collier said his first conviction for indecent exposure was in 2007 but since then he had committed further similar offences in 2009, 2011, 2012 and last year. He added: “You recognise there must be another custodial sentence.”
