Man had sex with girl, 13 – Jailed

A man has been jailed for having sex with a 13-year-old girl whose school was shut by a snowstorm.

Road worker Simon Stevens (30) bought alcohol and cigarettes for the teenager because she was too young to be served at their local shop and then invited her back to his flat in a Devon village.

He started having sex with her when she visited on a day when snowy weather caused dozens of schools in the area to be closed.

Stevens tried to deny having sex with the girl but police found incriminating text messages on her phone, Exeter Crown Court was told.

Stevens, of Wyndham Road, Silverton, admitted three offences of sexual activity with a child and was jailed for three and a half years by Judge Erik Salomonsen.

The judge told him:”You knew her age but you proceeded through texts, e-mails and other means to get closer to her and it resulted in the occasions when you had sexual contact with her.

“You now accept full responsibility and that what occurred was not trivial or say that her behaviour justified what you did.

“It is suggested on your behalf she was not corrupted by you. That is as may be, but she was only 13 and you were a man of mature years. You knew her age and had sex with her regardless.”

Emily Pitts, prosecuting, said the girl was among youngsters who visited a younger relation at Stevens’ flat and he befriended her.

The first sexual activity happened when she was unable to go to school because of snowy weather and they progressed to have full sex twice after he carried her into the bedroom.

His offences were discovered when she went to see a school nurse. She then told her family and police were called and found texts on her phone which showed what had been happening.

David Evans, defending, said Stevens would probably lose his job as a result of the case.
