January 2018: Barrie Lewis is now free and living in Edinburgh
Prison term for babysitter rapist
An autistic man who raped a girl while he was babysitting her in Edinburgh has been jailed for 12 years.
Barrie Lewis, 39, had given the 12-year-old £10 and told her not to tell her parents about the attacks.
He pleaded guilty to rape and other sexual offences at the High Court in Edinburgh.
In court, the 39-year-old from Greendykes Road, pleaded guilty to raping the 12-year-old between March 2007 and the following April. He also admitted a number of other offences, including forcing her to perform a sex act on him.
Lewis also pleaded guilty to using indecent behaviour with the second girl, who revealed the abuse, from when she was only 5-years-old.
The court was told he would kiss and touch the second girl and made her perform a sex act.
He also admitted having a stash of indecent images on his computer.
Lord Kinclaven ordered Lewis to serve a 12 year prison sentence, while he will remain on licence for three years upon his release.
Lewis’ name has also been added to the sex offenders’ register.
The victim was just five years old when the abuse began, advocate depute Graeme Jessop told the court.
The court heard how the rape came to light because Lewis had also been sexually abusing another young girl, who told a school friend what had happened but asked her to keep it secret.
Two years later, the friend told her mother who in turn contacted the family of the young victims.
Lewis also pleaded guilty to using indecent behaviour with the second girl, beginning when she was just nine years old.
He further admitted having child porn on his computer.
Judge Lord Kinclaven said Lewis was guilty of a gross breach of trust and there was no alternative to prison.
