Paedophile jailed for another child offence
A PAEDOPHILE already serving 12 years in prison for raping and abusing a young girl has had six months added to his jail term after admitting indecently assaulting another seven-year-old child.
Sentencing 81-year-old Joseph Hancock for the indecent assault, Judge Richard Gioserano told him: “Whilst the physical nature of the sexual abuse may be limited in comparison to other acts of sexual abuse there is, nevertheless, a great deal of harm caused here which the courts cannot overlook.”
Gavin Howie, prosecuting, told how the girl had been befriended by Hancock and fell asleep in the living room of his flat in Aldercroft Avenue, Breightmet, in the early 1980s. She woke in Hancock’s bed with him touching her leg.
“She felt as if he was trying to take her knickers off. She started to cry,” said Mr Howie, who added that Hancock then stopped touching her. Hancock went on to abuse other children, for which he has been sentenced, and the victim only felt able to tell police what had happened to her last year.
When questioned he initially denied committing the offence. “He was looking back to a period almost 40 years ago and the name meant nothing to him,” said Brian McKenna, defending.
Hancock was due to be freed on licence in September but will not now be let out of jail until the end of the year.
Pensioner guilty of raping young girl
A PENSIONER has been found guilty of raping a young girl who he sexually abused over a number of years.
Joseph Hancock, aged 76, of Red Lane, Breightmet , had already admitted eight counts of indecent assault on the girl, who was aged between eight and 12 at the time, but denied raping her.
During his three-day trial at Bolton Crown Court, the jury heard how Hancock, who was aged in his 50s at the time, would sexually abuse the girl in the living room of his former home in Monks Lane, Breightmet, in the garden shed, in a friend’s house and in Seven Acres Country Park.
His victim, who is now in her late 20s, told the court that Hancock had raped her in a bedroom after she went upstairs to use the toilet.
She said the abuse started when she was aged about eight in Seven Acres Country Park, when Hancock put his hand up her skirt while carrying her on his shoulders, and it continued on a regular basis over the next three or four years.
Hancock’s victim, who was visibly upset while giving evidence over video link, said she despised him and he made her skin crawl.
She said the abuse usually followed the same pattern, but on one occasion Hancock had raped her in an upstairs bedroom in his home.
The woman cannot be named for legal reasons.
Yesterday, the jury unanimously found Hancock guilty of rape between 1993 and 1995.
He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on November 6 at Bolton Crown Court.
