Jailed: The serial sex attacker who struck by bike
A SERIAL sexual predator who attacked 21 women and children as he cycled through Hull has been jailed.
Carl Walker preyed on females, who ranged from 12-year-old girls to women in their 60s, in the city centre and west Hull.
He even committed two attacks while on police bail.
Walker, 32, cycled up behind his victims, sexually assaulted them and threatened to rape them before cycling away.
He was caught after the Mail published CCTV images.
Detective Sergeant Julia Sergeant, of Humberside Police’s public protection unit, believes Walker was caught before his offending escalated.
She said: “He is a dangerous predator to women and children.
“We got him off the streets as soon as we could before he committed any other crimes.
“His offending was getting more frequent and he could have gone on to commit a more serious crime.
“It has been a complex and intense investigation for the officers involved. I would like to praise the bravery of the victims in coming forward and without their help we wouldn’t have this result.”
Some of his victims, who were targeted in broad daylight, say they have been left too afraid to walk the streets alone.
Walker, of Boulevard, west Hull, was jailed for three-and-a-half years at Hull Crown Court yesterday.
If Walker re-offends at any time within seven years after his release, he will be recalled to prison and be required to serve his full sentence.
The court heard how the attacks happened between October 17 and November 6 last year.
On each occasion, Walker cycled up and indecently touched his victims, before fleeing.
He attacked up to four victims a day. All the attacks happened within a three-mile radius.
Walker started off slapping his victims’ bottoms and his attacks became progressively more serious.
In a statement, a 14-year-old girl, who was chased and assaulted by Walker, said: “I’m no longer allowed out alone now.
“The feeling of fear I had that night was terrifying. I never went to feel it again.”
Police drafted in extra police officers in their hunt for him.
It was following an attack on October 25 that he was arrested as he cycled from the scene.
Walker was bailed by the police and arrested again on November 6 after two further attacks.
Mrs Sergeant added: “The Mail helped our investigation, with victims and witnesses coming forward after seeing the appeal.
“The police and the media worked well together to bring him to justice as soon as possible.”
Walker rode a black mountain bike, with a silver handlebar.
Police were able to identify it as his as the bike’s headlight was off centre.
Walker pleaded guilty to 13 sexual assaults at Hull Crown Court and one count of attempted sexual assault.
The judge ordered seven further sexual assault counts to lie on file.
The honorary Recorder of Hull and the East Riding Judge Michael Mettyear told Walker: “You would ride up to them on your bicycle and touch them in private parts.
“They were understandably shocked and disgusted by your conduct, some were very frightened and some haven’t really recovered from what happened.
“It is quite clear to me that you pose an ongoing risk to women and female children. It is the persistent nature of the offending, which in my view, makes an extended sentence appropriate and necessary.”
Walker was also ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for life and has been banned from unsupervised contact with children and from entering parks, amusement arcades and leisure centres for seven years.
Walker has two past convictions for indecently assaulting young children and served a previous prison sentence.
