Taxi rapist jailed for 10 years

A taxi driver has been jailed for 10 years for raping a schoolgirl and for another sex assault in Swansea.

Nigel Phillips, 36, from Gower, was sentenced on Thursday for raping a 15-year-old girl and indecently assaulting another female passenger.

The father-of-three, known as ‘Psycho’, denied the charges but a jury found him guilty at Swansea Crown last month.

Police said since then another two women have complained about Phillips and a fresh investigation has begun.

The court heard Phillips used his job to target young women for sex.

In November 2001 he collected three girls from a nightclub and after dropping two of them off swerved up a dark lane and raped the third, who was 15.

She could not pluck up the courage to complain and Phillips, who lived in the Gower village of Crofty, thought he had got away with it.

His older victim became fed up of his sexual advances and asked his taxi firm not to send him again but he turned up in disguise and assaulted her after she got into his cab thinking she was safe.

Sentencing Phillips to a total of 10 years Judge John Diehl banned him from working with children or driving taxis indefinitely.

He was also ordered to register with the police as a sex offender until further notice.

“Both these offences constitute a gross breach of trust,” said the judge.

“Members of the public taking taxis and cabs are entitled to be able to place their trust in the driver.”

The former bouncer smiled to relatives in the public gallery as he was jailed for nine years for rape and one for indecent assault.
