Jailed: The paedophile royal butler who took victim to meet the Queen Mother
He was the urbane gent who waited on the Royal Family for nine years – first serving the Queen at Buckingham Palace and then her mother.
But throughout his service Paul Kidd was leading a double life as a serial child abuser who molested a number of boys over a 30-year period.
Kidd, even stood for election as a UK Independent Party candidate in Dukinfield and Stalybridge in 2007 and received 283 votes – 9.7 per cent
The 55-year-old even groomed at least one of his teenage victims by taking him for tea with the Queen Mother – who knew nothing of the abuse – at Clarence House.
Yesterday Kidd was jailed for the abuse of three young boys – although it is thought there may be more who have not come forward.
Police began investigating him after a victim read a newspaper article written by Kidd in which he bragged about how he knew Princess Diana, published on the tenth anniversary of her death.
After seeing the article the victim, now 41, told officers how he was 14 when he was abused by Kidd after meeting him through a CB (Citizens Band) radio group.
When police raided his two-bedroom home in Stalybridge, near Manchester, they found almost 19,000 indecent pictures and videos of children.
Kidd began abusing another victim after meeting him at a religious group. He even had autographed pictures of Manchester United players on his walls at home to put the children at ease.
Yesterday Kidd was ordered to serve a minimum of six years before he could be considered for parole.
Sentencing him at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court, Judge Mushtaq Khokhar said: ‘It is suggested that you are someone who is dangerous and I have agreed with that suggestion.
‘You were someone who had influenced them (the victims) to such an extent that they were under your spell.
‘They would do anything that you asked them to do, I regard you as someone who is dangerous and presents a risk to all young people you may come across.’
During his years in royal service, Kidd claimed to have met and looked after three U.S. presidents, including Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan.
In 1979 he was awarded the Most Noble Order of Merit by then West German president while on a state visit with the Queen to that country.
He is one of only 32 people in the world to hold the award. He is also said to have worked closelywith Princess Diana at Buckingham Palace in the six months prior to her wedding.
In 1985 he gave up royal service because of a cancer scare and, after recovering, began charging up to £4,000 for after-dinner speeches in which he told of his time spent in service of the Queen and Queen Mother.
One source close to the case said: ‘Given that he has been behaving like this for 30 years the likelihood is there could be many other victims out there who have not yet come forward.
‘This man used his royal connections to impress and seduce young boys. To many he was very urbane and charming but he hid a very dark secret indeed.’
Kidd pleaded guilty to 29 charges of indecent assault, sexual activity with a child and the possessing and making of indecent images of children between December 1974 and January 2008. All charges relate to three victims.
